a tiny courtyard

This slither of a garden in St Kilda had to work hard. The brief called for variety in the planting, summer shade and winter sun, a richness in detailing as well maximising storage and the sense of space.

Hemmed in by masonry walls on all sides the 12.5 by 2.5 metre space is lightened by a translucent cedar and fibreglass screen on the eastern boundary and a matching steel and fibreglass gate at its western end.

Integrated seating and planters disguise storage zones and steel fretwork on the northern wall supports a range of climbing plants. Custom mix concrete paving units, sawn bluestone offcuts and 2nd hand red brick feature in the linear paving composition.
