mentone parade memorial park

The redesign of Mentone Parade Memorial Park realigned its central axis with the tower of the Returned Services League building that sits above the park. The existing obelisk was also moved to a central position in a stone paved ceremonial court.
Beyond this court, the central path runs through a blood red garden of Eastern Redbud trees (Cercis) and bisects a granite memorial wall. To the left are two panels of the granite wall, inscribed with the names of local men who lost their lives in the two world wars, in the American – Vietnam - War and the Indonesian Confrontation. To the right, the wall continues for twelve metres, inscribed along its base a field of red poppies and above, the well-known stanza from the Ode of Remembrance.
The southern side of the park, planted with Lone Pines balances the asymmetrical plan of the park and sentinel Italian Cypresses enclose the ceremonial court. The central path is lined with Coastal Banksia; these are more loosely arranged as the path steps up the slope to the east. A timber ramp now provides an accessible route from the memorial park to the RSL building above.
